Institutes

Private Institutes "Hakwons" are the places easiest to find when looking for a teaching position with just a university graduate or a junior college graduate with an English or Educational degree. Hakwons will be the ideal place for newcomers or inexperienced teachers to start from. You may build character and skill while storing your experience.

Experiences you have made can use towards your future job either back at home or just to find a better opportunity in Korea.

Many Hakwans are available all around Korea, particularly in the Chongno, Shinchon, Kangnam, and the Kyongi Province area (Pundang, Ilsan, Sanbon, Ansan, Su-Ji, and more)

Institutes will offer you all the basic work condition from free housing, free airfare, visa sponsorship, overtime pay and severance pay. But they aren'>t the best payers.

There are two basic kinds of schedules:

Children institutes are from Monday through Friday, with occasional Saturdays. The working hours are from 9AM to 8PM with breaks in between.

Adult institutes are from Monday through Friday, with No Saturdays. The working hours are a split shift, early hours from 6AM to 9AM and evening hours 5PM to 9PM with options to teach in between. Privates Lessons are an option but not advisable. If caught, you may be fine, fired by you employer and deported out of Korea.

So, if you have the experience, you may get a better salary and a better working condition. But for you beginners, institutes are only the places hiring beginners.

Going through recruiters are advisable. Be careful in choosing the right recruiters. Some will charge the teachers a fee.

Agencies

Agencies are companies that provide teachers classes for Korean Businesses or for the School at a fee.

Unfortunately, many agencies are run by unorganized Korean and sometimes even charge teachers a work fee. Usually, agencies are run by experience teachers are advisable. They will to look for an appropriate position for teachers. And knows the in's and out's in defending the teachers incase of any mishaps.

Travel teaching will earn you a better pay. The salary will range from 20,000 to 50,000 on the hourly rate. But there are no benefits and a commission of 50-70% will be taken by the agency. Finding a block schedule will be difficult. If you choose to travel teach, then you will be working during the business workers off hours. Sometimes, agencies will have you travel for an hour or two to teach an hour of class without transportation money.

Take into consideration teaching at an institute offers block schedules. They will offer you 15,000 per class teaching 3 to 4 classes at a time. This will give you an opportunity to earn a decent salary without traveling.

With travel teaching, students will lack the effort in their studies because the English classes are offered for free. So the level of commitment will be far lower and the class will be far boring than expected. If you end up with the some boring business people. Good Luck!!!

Private Tutoring

The minimal pay for private lesson is 25,000won. It is very much unsteady but high paying and very much illegal. If you happen to get caught by either your employer or immigration. You will be fined, fired from your current job and deported.

Private Lessons are easy to do but hard to come across. Sometimes, your regular class students might want you to have private lessons. Advertising and going through agencies, and institutes are the best way to find private lessons at a certain commission fee.

Of course, the more that you advertise the greater the chance of getting caught and being deported.

Suppose you are willing to the risk then you will be able to make some serious money.

Your advertising techniques will have to be creative as most conventional. For example you could try looking for private lessons in the Kangnam, Pundang, Songbuk-dong and any areas of Seoul.

Maybe you post fliers or hand out leaflets. Even posters announcing your services at a few universities may prove successful and postings advertisements on the Internet might stimulate some interest. You may even post advertisements with www.OkayKorea.com.

Universities & Schools

The best positions to find in Korea. The universities have paid the best salaries and offer the same working accommodations as the private institutes.

One requirement, they only hiring qualified teachers. Applicants with a Masters or TEFL are a minimal. If you don't have any these qualifications, don't bother applying for a university position.

Many teachers come out to Korea to work for the institutes, and have had earned some skills of teaching in Korea. Teachers will apply for the universities, thinking they are well qualified. For this reason well qualified teachers are hired only at the university level.
 
 

Other Opportunities

Copy-editing, proof reading and translation positions are available for newspaper, private companies or publishing companies. The market is very small a limited in this field and the competition is tight. Sometimes, the working hours are not stable and the amount of work might be horrendous.

Doing recordings for language classes is another opportunity for work. If you are a Native Speaker with a North American accent, you can make from 50,000 ~ 70,000 won per hour.

Writers of the English language can teach and write in Korea. Newspaper companies like the Korea Times and Korea Herald offers opportunities for foreigners to write as a freelance writer. The pay is not the highest paying job but the experience and the enjoyment of writing is enlightening.

Some Korean companies hire foreigners for PR and Media positions but requires the speaker to have a United States Passport.
